Shiras Moose Hunt

Large Shiras Moose at Cold Meadows

Shiras moose (Wyoming moose) and their hunting permits had been increasing because of the growing moose population until the wolf reintroduction in 1995.  Since then, the numbers have plummeted to where there are almost no moose left in our hunting area. The only hunt left available to hunt in our area is Unit 20A. In 2007, we saw a total of one moose.  We do not even recommend that anyone apply for the tags but if you do, the time to apply for moose is the month of April.  Sadly, moose bring very little revenue to the state so very little money gets put towards managing these large ungulates.  It is too bad that such organizations as Defenders of Wildlife can threaten to sue the state of Idaho for trying to manage wolves even after the decimation of our moose population.
